Seven decades on, they still talk about the Golden Team. 

That was the name given to the legendary Hungarian national team of the 1950s. The team, led by Ferenc Puskas, that reached the final of the 1954 World Cup and beat England 6-3 at Wembley in the so-called ‘Match of the Century.’

This was a golden age for Hungarian football and until recently a distant memory of the country being impactful at the top level of the international game.

Indeed, Hungary went 40 years without qualifying for a European Championships and still haven’t played at a World Cup since 1986.

At Euro 2024, though, Hungary have the opportunity to make their mark. Marco Rossi has forged a team that is more than the sum of its parts and has achieved some eye-catching results in recent times.

Hungary’s success, however, comes against a murky political backdrop.

The country’s footballing resurgence has coincided with Viktor Orban’s premiership, but how much of that is actually coincidence?

And how would the sport in Hungary fare if Orban - currently facing strong opposition following last week’s EU elections - were toppled?
