The Northern Mariana Islands was the setting for one of the most scandalous pieces of football lore of the 21st century.
Irish fans certainly know all about what took place in Saipan, the largest island and capital of Northern Mariana Islands in the northwestern Pacific Ocean.
It’s where Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy’s infamous bust-up before the 2002 World Cup happened. There’s a film about the incident. It was released last month and stars Steve Coogan as McCarthy.
A lot more football lore could be created on the islands in the future if the Northern Mariana Islands are accepted as a new FIFA member.
They are counting on the help of a certain United States President to make that happen.
