There isn’t much in the small town of Spiesen-Elversberg in the southwest of Germany to suggest it is currently home to the best football story in the country.

Not many people live there, certainly since the town’s coal-mining pit closed down. Throughout the town, there are hints of a time when Spiesen-Elversberg powered Germany’s economic growth.

Now, the town’s football club of SV Elversberg is powering belief in an underdog story for the ages.

Only a few years ago, Die Elve were in Germany’s regional league system. They were unknown to most football fans in the country. Now, they’re on the brink of the Bundesliga.

A home victory over Schalke this weekend would lift Elversberg into the 2. Bundesliga promotion places. With only six games left, the top tier is very much within reach.

Elversberg deserve your attention, although one German club is already well aware of their story and seemingly determined to poach their best assets.
