Only once has the Copa America Femenina trophy been lifted by a team not wearing yellow and green.
That was in 2006 when Argentina broke Brazil’s dominance of the competition which had until that point been won by one team and one team only.
It was meant to be a landmark moment for Argentinean women’s football.
Brazil, however, quickly re-asserted their dominance by winning the Copa America Femenina for a fifth time in 2010 - and a sixth time in 2014, a seventh time in 2018 and an eighth time in 2022. Brazil are favourites to make it four in-a-row this summer.
While Argentina are well-established as a men’s football superpower, it’s a different story on the women’s side. Why are they so far behind Brazil?
