Having dropped to third in the Egyptian Premier League table after losing to Tala’ea El Gaish, the Cairo-based club imposed a 30% pay cut on its entire squad, threatening a further 25% cut if results don’t improve.
The 45-time Egyptian champions have high standards and the current crop are struggling to meet them as the business end of the 25/26 season approaches.
Manager Jess Thorup could pay for this with his job. Indeed, reports claim the Dane will be fired if Al Ahly fail to beat Esperance in Sunday’s CAF Champions League quarter-final.
These are chaotic times for Al Ahly whose grip of Egyptian football might finally be slipping.
