Within three days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the country was made a football pariah.

That’s how quickly FIFA and UEFA announced Russia had been banned from its various competitions. It was just one of the many sanctions against the country.

Saint Petersburg was stripped of hosting the 2022 Champions League final. Russia were blocked from qualifying for the 2022 World Cup despite having hosted the competition in 2018.

This suspension remains in place, but football is still happening in Russia. Some even argue the sport in the country is now in a better place.
