The Oceania champions are semi-professional. They have day jobs. One player is a barber. Another is a teacher. Their manager works full time as an dentist and their general manager as a realtor.

Auckland City’s mission at the Club World Cup is simply not to get embarrassed. That might be beyond them considering the opposition (Bayern Munich, Benfica and Boca Juniors) they have been drawn against.

Some say this exposes the farce of Gianni Infantino’s ego trip. Others, however, could argue this is exactly why the Club World Cup needs to exist.
