🤝 The Unity Cup is joyous proof of London's football multiculturalism

India, Jamaica, Nigeria and Zimbabwe are having a mini-tournament this week!

Neither Jamaica nor Nigeria will be at this summer’s World Cup, but the two teams will meet in the final of another international tournament this weekend.

The Unity Cup is a competition designed to fortify ties between, and showcase, some of London’s largest diasporas. India, Jamaica, Nigeria and Zimbabwe are all taking part this year.

It’s a tournament with a sporadic history in the 21st century, held in 2002 and 2004 before being revived last year. Now recognised by FIFA, the Unity Cup has a competitive spirit on the pitch and a party atmosphere in the stands.

This might not be the tournament anyone involved wanted to play in this summer, but the Unity Cup epitomises some of the things that make international football special.
