Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh have fled the 'forgotten war' to keep Sudanese football alive!
There is nearly 5,000km between Mauritania and Sudan, but for Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh - Sudan’s two biggest clubs - Northwest Africa is home, for the time being.
Invited to play in the Super D1 (Mauritania’s top division) this season due to civil war in their homeland, the two Sudanese rivals are playing for more than just points.
“The people of Sudan need to see that there is more to life than war,” said Abdelqadir Musa, Al-Hilal CEO. “They need to see something on the television or hear something on the radio or television that is about sport and not just war and fighting.”
Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh are the lucky ones with the rest of the Sudan Premier League currently dormant. It is on them to keep the flame of Sudanese domestic football alive.
Both sides have the quality to target the Mauritanian title with Al-Hilal top of the Super D1 after five games. Could they really become champions of another country?
