It’s not just English football Todd Boehly has tried - and largely failed - to get to grips with.

Indeed, the American businessman has also struggled in French football as the figurehead of a consortium that bought RC Strasbourg last summer.

While Chelsea, however, have spent their way into a hole under Boehly’s control, Strasbourg have suffered in a different way.

Founded 118 years ago, the club in eastern France has a long and storied history.

That history includes a Ligue 1 title triumph in 1979 and seven domestic cups win - the most recent coming in the 2018/19 Coupe de la Ligue.

Strasbourg are one of just six clubs to have won all three major trophies in French football.

Now, though, Les Alsaciens exist to serve Chelsea in a multi-club network - and their fans aren’t happy about it. 

Inadvertently, Boehly and the BlueCo consortium that owns Strasbourg have blundered their way into a situation that encapsulates football’s latest existential conundrum.
