The Copa Libertadores final says something about the balance of power in South American club football
Technically, Boca Juniors haven’t won a single knockout match in this season’s Copa Libertadores. Still, though, they find themselves in Saturday’s final.
That’s thanks to Sergio Romero. The former Manchester United goalkeeper has been the hero for Boca in three separate shootouts - first against Nacional of Uruguay, then versus fellow Argentines Racing and finally against Palmeiras in the semi-finals.
Romero has faced 11 penalty kicks in the Copa Libertadores this season and has sensationally saved six.Â
This has set up a clash between Boca Juniors and Fluminense at the Maracana this Saturday with the visitors to Rio de Janeiro targeting their first Copa Libertadores triumph in 16 years.
However, Boca Juniors find themselves swimming against the tide as the water of South American club football threatens to wash away non-Brazilian teams.
