It was only last summer that Michael Owen sat in front of the media as the new face of Pakistani football.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker was presented as an ambassador for the Pakistani Football League, a newly created division designed to stimulate the development of the game in a country that has never truly taken to it.
Pakistan is a cricket country. An estimated 67 million people watched the recent ICC Champions Trophy match against India with Pakistan’s cricket team ranked as one of the best in the world.
The country’s football team, however, is ranked 198th. Despite boasting a population of nearly 250 million, Pakistan are the 13th worst national team in the world. And now they’ve been banned by FIFA for the third time in just eight years.
