Never before had a Singaporean team reached the final of an Asian continental club competition until Lion City Sailors did it last season.

Indeed, The Sailors run to the AFC Champions League Two showpiece game was historic. They rode the crest of a wave that carried them past opponents from Australia, Japan, Thailand, China and Indonesia.

While they were edged out in the final by Sharjah (UAE) who scored a stoppage time winner to lift the trophy, The Sailors’ success highlighted the footballing potential of Singapore, a country that hasn’t always appeared on the radar of the Asian game.
