🇸🇷 How colonial payback helped make Suriname's World Cup dream possible
The Natio are just two games from making the World Cup for the first time!
When Suriname needed a little motivation, they called the team that came closer than any other before to guiding the Caribbean nation to a World Cup.
It was 48 years ago that the Natio qualified for the 1977 CONCACAF Championship from which CONCACAF’s spots for the 1978 World Cup were decided. Suriname had reason to dream.
Ultimately, Suriname finished bottom, winless in five games, but current head coach Stanley Menzo still wanted to draw on those players’ experience. They gave the team talk the night before last month’s crunch qualifier against Guatemala.
Menzo’s side have already eclipsed the achievements of the 1977 team. Suriname are just two games from qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
It’s been a long road to get this far.
