Scotland had been warned, but there was nothing they could do but watch Konstantinos Karetsas stick one in the top corner.

The 17-year-old’s emphatic finish in Greece’s comfortable UEFA Nations League playoff victory at Hampden Park was proof of his much-discussed talent.

Karetsas has been linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs and he isn’t alone in being at the vanguard of Greece’s next generation.

22-year-old Giannis Konstantelias also scored against Scotland, as did 23-year-old Christos Tzolis. 21-year-old Konstantinos Koulierakis was imperious in central defence, keeping a clean sheet.

More than 20 years on from Greece’s greatest triumph at Euro 2004, the country looks to have produced something special again.
