Can Glasgow City continue to hold back tide in Scottish women's football?
Celtic and Rangers are growing forces in the SWPL, threatening to cut adrift traditional flag-bearers for Scottish women's football
In Scottish men’s football, there is historically only room for two - Celtic and Rangers. The pair have dominated the sport in the country for over a century, sharing the last 38 Scottish top flight titles between them. In women’s football, however, the landscape is rather different, although that might not be the case for much longer.
Just like in the men’s game, Glasgow is the cradle of power in Scottish women’s football, but the dominant force play in neither blue nor green and white. Instead, the orange and black of Glasgow City has fluttered from the Scottish Women’s Premier League trophy in 15 of the last 17 seasons with their latest triumph coming last month.
Yet the landscape is changing. Investment is flowing into Scottish women’s football, which is broadly a positive thing, but could clubs like Glasgow City be left behind?
