π¬πͺ Georgia is finally escaping its complicated Soviet past at Euro 2024
Euro 2024 has given Georgia the chance to shed old Soviet stereotypes!
Georgia has a long and storied history as a football nation.
When the USSR played a friendly against Brazil in 1965, four Georgians were included in the team. They posed for a picture with Pele in an image that was widely used as propaganda by the Soviet press.
Dinamo Tbilisi also won the Cup Winnersβ Cup in 1981.
As an independent nation, though, Georgian football struggled to carve out a new identity for itself separate from the old Soviet Union.Β
This is why Euro 2024 is so special to the nation of 3.7 million people. Having qualified for its first major tournament, Georgia is finally making a mark of its own.
