Not content with qualifying for just one World Cup this year, New Caledonia punched their ticket to two.

Not bad for an archipelago of just 270,000 people spread over 135 different islands.

The first of those two World Cups kicks off this week with New Caledonia opening their U20 World Cup campaign against the United States on Monday.

The contrast between the two nations could hardly be any starker.

While the US boasts several young stars on the books of some of Europe’s biggest clubs including Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, New Caledonia’s squad is decidedly amateur.

So how did Les Cagous earn their place at the U20 showcase in Chile, as well as the U17 World Cup in November, and could this lead to New Caledonia’s senior side making next year’s World Cup proper?
