A new era of Australian football kicked off last weekend.
In a stadium more suited to hosting track and field, the first-ever Australian Championship match was played between South Melbourne and Sydney Olympic - and it didn’t disappoint.
South Melbourne - the club for which Ange Postecoglou played over 200 times and later managed - scored a stoppage time stunner to edge a five-goal thriller 3-2 in front of a 6,000-strong crowd.
After a decade of planning, the new league couldn’t have made a better first impression. However, the success of Australia’s new second tier won’t be purely judged on attendances and goals.
Indeed, the creation of the Australian Championship raises a philosophical question. It could give the A-League - which kicks off this weekend - an existential crisis.
