It’s been a long time since Indonesia last appeared at a World Cup.
Invited to the inaugural World Cup in 1938 as the Dutch East Indies before achieving independence in 1945, the country of over 280 million people has long been the sleeping giant of Southeast Asian football.
That sleeping giant, however, might be waking up. Pasukan Garuda are more than holding their own in qualification for the 2026 World Cup and are targeting a maiden regional title in the 2024 ASEAN Championship which kicks off this weekend.
With Indonesia on a steep upward trajectory, 280 million fans increasingly have something to cheer for.
