Only five clubs have won the Spanish title in the 21st century.

You know three of them - Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid have shared the last 21 titles dating back two decades. Rafael Benitez’s Valencia were also champions in the 2003/04 season.

So too were Deportivo La Coruña at the turn of the millennium, winning the 1999/00 title. They were a formidable force at the top of the Spanish game.

Since 2018, though, the Galician club have languished in the Spanish lower leagues, sinking as low as the third tier and even flirting with relegation further down the pyramid.

After such a nadir, however, Depor are potentially on their way back to La Liga. Their story is a remarkable one.
