Countries and cities in the immediate aftermath of a World Cup can be strange places. Even more so in Qatar.
This was, after all, a nation that spent 12 years (and a staggering $220 billion) preparing for the biggest party in sport. The 2022 World Cup came to define Qatar. Now, people who visit the country say it is lifeless.
A whole year has passed since the party started. And on 18th December a whole year will have passed since it ended.
So what has happened in Qatar since the 2022 World Cup finished with Lionel Messi and Argentina lifting the trophy?
Has the country kept its promises regarding worker rights? What’s left of the infrastructure put in place for the tournament and has the World Cup’s legacy improved the lives of Qatari citizens as it was meant to?
