🇪🇬 A refereeing controversy has sparked a civil war between Egypt’s biggest clubs

Al Ahly's refusal to play the Cairo Derby has deepened divisions!

Every team complains about refereeing decisions made against them, but Egyptian giants Al Ahly have gone further than most this season.

Unhappy with the standard of officiating in the Egyptian Premier League, the 44-time national champions boycotted a highly anticipated Cairo Derby earlier this month.

They demanded a foreign referee be drafted in for the match against Zamalek. When the league refused (after initially agreeing), Al Ahly failed to show up. The game was postponed just 15 minutes before kick off.

Zamalek were awarded three points, something Al Ahly now intends to appeal through CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). They’ve already appealed to the Egyptian Olympic Committee.

Meanwhile, there’s a title race to be decided. And potentially history to be made.
